You don’t need social media…..yet

I recently met-up with some acquaintances who run a bakery in a very small town, the type of town which everyone knows each other. They came to me asking for some social media advice because their business is not what they anticipated it to be - mind you they are small and only launched about 7 months ago. During my meeting I noticed some disturbing things that really goes back to the fundamentals of business and customer service 101 - I’ll address this later.

Let me ramble for a second:

Launching a business in a small town is tough. Tough because you need to build trust and credibility. Everyone knows each other and most importantly everyone knows your competition and trusts them already - no matter how much better your product is, they trust your competitor; their kids go to school together, they attend the same functions and so on.

Back to the story:

Time passed and as I sat there, listening to them ramble on about unrealistic objectives, customers were frequenting the store - all buying products. I noticed my acquaintances had zero customer service, lacked engagement and most importantly had no personality. They rushed their customers to make decisions and were blatantly rude.

Get Social:

Get social in the “physical” world before you develop a want for the digital world. Your persona in the physical world translates to the digital world - brand yourself as a subject matter expert, then develop a want to reach to millions of potential customers.
